Getting less polluted cities is everyone’s goal. Therefore, different measures are being taken to achieve this. One of them is to create areas that certain vehicles cannot enter. From Ingartek, as experts in mobility, we show you the low emission zones of Madrid.
WHICH ARE MADRID’S LOW EMISSION ZONES?
The Madrid low emission zones are areas in which it is intended to improve the environment in its 21 districts. They are included in the Madrid 360 Map.
Although the entire city has been declared a Low Emission Zone, the truth is that the restrictions began on January 1, 2022 and will continue to be extended until 2025.
It should be remembered that it was on September 13, 2021 when the new Sustainable Mobility Ordinance was approved. It is hoped that over time the entire city will be able to meet the requirements, but always in a rational and proportional way.
WHAT AREAS DOES THE MADRID 360 PROJECT INCLUDE AT THIS MOMENT?
In the Madrid 360 project there are two Special Protection Low Emission Zones, ZBEDEBP, which are the Center and also Plaza Elíptica. This is because the problems related to pollution are more serious. Of course, both merchants and residents have the same access and circulation rights.
In the Madrid low emission zone, access and circulation will only be limited for the moment to cars with an A classification, that is, those that do not have an environmental label. They are currently 14% of all those who enter the city daily.
Only those who, as of January 1, 2022, were already domiciled in Madrid, within the Vehicle Registry of the General Directorate of Traffic and who paid the Tax on Mechanical Traction Vehicles, may enter the protected areas. All of them will be able to pass and circulate throughout the capital until December 31, 2024. However, they have to meet the two requirements that we have just mentioned.
The objective of the Madrid City Council is that all citizens of the capital have the same rights and are protected. For this reason, they want to apply the restrictions little by little, notifying them in advance and offering alternatives so that drivers can adapt to the new situation.
The dates and restrictions for vehicles with classification A appear on the website of the Madrid town hall, as well as the Madrid low emission zone that is affected:
- As of January 1, 2022, access to and circulation on urban public roads inside the M-30 is prohibited, excluding the M-30 itself.
- As of January 1, 2023, access to and circulation on urban public roads inside the M-30 and on the M-30 itself is prohibited.
- As of January 1, 2024, its access and circulation on all public and urban roads in the municipality of Madrid is prohibited.
