Challenges facing the urban cyclist

Urban cycling has established itself as a sustainable and healthy transport alternative. However, urban cyclists face a number of challenges that can discourage their daily use. At Ingartek, we recognise the importance of creating more cyclist-friendly cities and we work to offer solutions that improve the experience and safety of those who choose the bicycle as their means of transport.

Challenges for the urban cyclist:

  • Insufficient infrastructure: The lack of segregated and safe cycle lanes remains one of the main barriers. Routes are often incomplete or poorly connected, exposing cyclists to dangerous situations in motorised traffic.
  • Secure parking: Bicycle theft is a constant concern. Lack of secure parking at key locations such as public transport stations and workplaces discourages many from cycling.
  • Road awareness and behaviour: Cyclists often face aggressive behaviour from drivers and pedestrians, which puts their safety at risk and discourages cycling.

At Ingartek, we develop urban mobility plans that prioritise the safe integration of bicycles in the urban environment. We propose the creation of segregated cycle lanes, improved signage and the implementation of traffic calming policies in key areas. In addition, we work on the design of safe and accessible parking facilities for bicycles, promoting their use in combination with other modes of transport such as train or bus.

Our approach also includes education and awareness raising for all road users, encouraging respectful and safe behaviour that benefits both cyclists and other users of public space.
